SAHRC finding highlights issues of community relocation to make way for mining

The issue of human rights and mining is highlighted in a first-of-a-kind investigation into the relocation of communities to make way for mining…However…human rights activist Rhoda Kadalie…says that the report fails to state whether or not human-rights violations took place or who committed them and the commission’s seven-month investigation…turns up nothing but a few esoteric recommendations..In an open letter…SAHRC chairperson Jody Kollapen refutes Kadalie’s assertions…[Department of Minerals & Energy] DDG Jacinto Rocha…concurs that the issues raised in the report are serious and notes that companies need to address human rights issues when dealing with communities [refers to Anglo Platinum (part of Anglo American), African Rainbow Minerals]
