Bishops in the Philippines call for mining moratorium

In a pre-Christmas call, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines has demanded a moratorium on all mining and logging – until Indigenous Peoples’ rights are truly respected. London-listed Anglo American and BHP Billiton have been among the mining companies involved in the Philippines.

In response the country’s Chamber of Mines claims the Bishops are “out of touch” with the million or more Filipinos and Filipinas who rely on the “responsible” segment of the industry. See http://www.minesandcommunities.org/article.php?a=8996
