As predicted on the Mines and Communities website last year, and despite some momentary rallies early in the new year, global base metals companies are now confronted with virtually unprecedented falls in commodity prices. Worse, their ratings by banks and investors’ services have been cut dramatically while companies are sacking workers by the thousands. Could this be the beginning of the end of mining as we know (and many of us deplore) it?
