A world free of mercury? Not yet – but hope rises

It may not represent complete victory, but the unanimous decision by more than 140 states to voluntarily “control” mercury emissions to the environment is a welcome and major step to ridding the planet of one of its most toxic substances. Since coal-fired power plants are the biggest culprits – followed by artisanal gold mining – final success will clearly be a long time coming. Meanwhile, the former Bush regime’s ruling to exempt US power plants from the strictest mercury emissions standards has been struck down.
