The national committee to protect oil, gas, mineral recourses, power and port on Wednesday observed the third anniversary of Phulbari Day with a call for implementation of six-point Phulbari agreement. On this day in 2006, three people were killed as the police opened fire on a rally at Phulbari in Dinajpur. The BNP-led alliance government signed the six-point agreement with the national committee, saying that it will not lease the Phulbari coal mine to Asia Energy and stop extraction of coal in open pit method, but the agreement was not implemented to date.
The national committee held central programmes in Phulbari marking the day including placing wreaths at Shaheed Minar, holding morning procession and a discussion meeting. The committee convener, Sheikh Muhammad Shaheedullah, member secretary economist Anu Muhammad, Workers Party President Rashed Khan Menon, academics Noor Mohammad, left leaders Tipu Biswas, Ruhin Hossain Prince, Mushrefa Mishu and Zonayed Saki attended the programmes.
The national committee also placed wreaths in the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. Other organisations that placed wreaths at the Shaheed Minar were Communist Party of Bangladesh, Workers Party of Bangladesh, Bangladesher Samajtantrik Dal, Workers Party (reconstituted), Ganatantri Party, Revolutionary Workers Party of Bangladesh, Jatiya Gana Front, Ganasanghati Andolan, BSD (Mahboob) and left leaning student organisations.
