Will Pascua Lama be put out to grass?
Argentina’s Supreme Court has rejected a 2010 ruling by a federal judge in San Juan province, that key provisions of Argentina’s glacier protection law can be ignored. The law will now be applied across the country, and specifically to San Juan where the world’s leading gold producer, Barrick Gold Corp, has been struggling to bring its Pascua Lama mine on stream.
Barrick is a Canadian company with significant British investment (see http://moneytometal.org/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=Barrick&go=Go).
Other companies potentially affected include London-listed Anglo American, Glencore and Xstrata.
