Foil Vedanta at protest in Odisha May 2013
Environment Minister Veerappa Moily has decided not to allow the Vedanta Group to mine the Niyamgiri Hills for bauxite, the raw material that it needs for its Rs 4,500-crore alumina plant at Lanjigarh, ministry officials said. The decision will be conveyed to the Supreme Court this month, they added. This is very good news, and should be the final nail in the coffin for Vedanta’s plan to mine the hills, which are sacred to the Dongria Kondh Indigenous People.
