Volunteer with us

Do you want to work with us, in solidarity with those fighting the injustices of British mining operations abroad?

In the office:

If you’d like to take part in our work, we are always looking for volunteers who can commit to working with us regularly for several months at a time. Previously, volunteers have often assisted our communications officer with social media outreach, website management and blog posting, as well as with organising events and admin tasks.

The type of activity you do will depend on what we’re doing at the time, but we will always try to shape your work with us around your strengths, interests and what you’d like to learn while you are with us. We only work part-time which that it can be more difficult to find days that suit everyone but we’ll do our best!

We provide a reimbursement of transport and lunch for each day you are working with us in the office or at events.

Send us a brief email if you’d like to consider volunteering with us: contact@londonminingnetwork.org

Julia

“It’s been a wonderful experience volunteering at the LMN office. I’ve learned a lot, both about mining companies and community resistance, and in terms of skills like social media outreach, activism, helping run events and protests, and getting an insight into how a charity is run. There were opportunities to attend interesting talks and events, and meet activists from all around the world. I felt like I made a difference, and it was also an invaluable addition to my CV, which helped me get my current job.”

~ Julia, office volunteer from January to July 2016

Beyond joining us as a longer-term volunteer, there are a few areas in which we often need short-term specific help, such as:

Translation:

We sometimes need translation of documents from and for communities we are working in solidarity with, so if you are confident in a non-English language and would like to help us, please do get in touch and we will keep you in mind when these moments arise.

Education and outreach:

We are on the lookout for volunteers to help us deliver PhoneCycle workshops in schools and in the community. You will always be with a worker who has experience in running workshops. Ideas and help to create new educational resources are also welcome if you prefer to support from home!

Journalism:

If you enjoy reporting and writing and would like to use it to amplify the voices of human rights and environmental defenders, we’d love to have you on board. When we have visitors in the UK, you could interview them, write a story on the demands of a community, or report on a demonstration that is taking place. We will help you to pitch your story to editors that we are in touch with.

Graphic design:

People with creative design skills are also a great help for one-off designs, both for social media images and for event leaflets and posters.

Finding London venues:

If you have connections with spaces that might be available free or cheap for either public events or private meetings, we are regularly searching for affordable, accessible venues in London. If you have any leads (via connections with universities, community centres or unions, for example), do let us know!

If none of these are possible for you, but you’d still like to lend your support, you can still:

* Attend protests and events! Join our email list for call-outs

* Sign up to be a monthly donor or give a off one donation to LMN online

* Follow us on Twitter and Facebook and share our posts to spread the word amongst your friends
