Mongolia’s government may safely be described as pro-mining. It wants to develop the mineral resources of its country – and it expects to gain significant economic, social and political benefits from expansion of the mining sector. Government officials want the $5 billion coming into the Oyu Tolgoi copper and gold project.
The companies developing the Oyu Tolgoi project are Ivanhoe and Rio Tinto. This article erroneously suggests that Rio Tinto is a Chilean multinational. It is, of course, British/Australian – but despite this strange mistake, the article raises important issues about Mongolia’s mining boom.
