This week the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is meeting in Quebec City. There is some irony to the venue of this meeting which may not be obvious to all Metro readers. The UK-based mining giant Rio Tinto is the official Olympic supplier of the metal used to make the 2012 Olympic medals, providing 99 per cent of the gold and other metals. However, the company is caught up in controversy with trade unions and environmental campaigners arguing that its practices go against the Olympic spirit.
