Over sixty prominent Australians have initiated an open letter to the country’s biggest four banks, calling for an end to investments in the fossil fuel industry and the beginnings of divestment from the sector, in order to avoid runaway climate change. Among the leading signatories are scientists, religious leaders, former politicians, musicians, artists, environmentalists, health professionals, academics and writers – even the former Chair of the Australian Coal Association, along with a Nobel Laureate in Literature, two-time Booker prize winner and two-time Olympic rower.
Among London-listed companies mining coal in Australia are Anglo American, BHP Billiton, Glencore Xstrata and Rio Tinto.
