British MP Diane Abbott has proposed an ‘Early Day Motion’ (EDM), which functions like a petition for Members of Parliament to sign to express a view on a matter of concern. Her EDM, number 1902, calls on the British Government to take action to prevent Vedanta from constructing a mine in the Niyamgiri Hills. The text of the EDM is below.
If you live in the United Kingdom, please contact your MP and ask him or her to sign this EDM.

EDM 1902

Abbott, Diane
That this House supports the Kondh tribal people of Niyamgiri, India in opposing the British-listed company Vedanta Resources plc project to construct a bauxite mine in the area; recognises that the plans will cause immense irreversible environmental damage to an area of great conservation significance; further recognises that Niyamgiri is also the ancestral and spiritual home to thousands of people who depend on it for their food, livelihoods, culture and as the seat of their god; and calls on the Government to take action to prevent Vedanta Resources plc from constructing the bauxite mine in that area.
