Global mining firm Rio Tinto presented ore on Friday to the organisers of the London 2012 Olympics that will be used to create the medals, a gesture likely to be costlier than the last time it was involved thanks to higher metal prices.

Ore will come from the Bingham Canyon mine in Utah, USA, and the Oyu Tolgoi mine in Mongolia. Both are the subjects of community campaigns against pollution: see https://londonminingnetwork.org/?s=Utah and https://londonminingnetwork.org/?s=Oyu+Tolgoi.
