Anglo American announced last week it has appointed current AngloGold Ashanti CEO, Mark Cutifani, as Cynthia Carroll’s replacement.
Carroll, who took the reins at the transnational miner in March of 2007 announced in October last year that she would be stepping down as soon as a suitable replacement could be found.
In Cutifani, the group and many investors believe they have found just that.
The industry’s critics, however, may point to AngloGold Ashanti’s appalling history of complicity in human rights violations and environmental destruction as a potent reason not to be cheerful.
