The Delhi High Court has issued a notice to the central government and the Election Commission seeking a directive for a probe into the Congress and the BJP parties allegedly accepting donations from subsidiaries of the Vedanta Group. Vedanta is listed and headquartered in London. It therefore counts as a foreign company, despite the fact that it is controlled by Indian citizen Anil Agarwal and his family. The Representation of the People Act prohibits political parties from taking donations from government companies and from foreign sources.
