Protest against the Skouries gold mine
There’s been dramatic back-and-forth over London-listed Canadian company Eldorado Gold’s Skouries gold mining project in Halkidiki, Greece. Over the Christmas holidays members of the Plataforma pola defensa de Corcoesto e Bergantiños travelled to Megali Panagia, a town very close to the Skouries mine, and sent a message of solidarity to communities fighting the mine.
Shortly afterwards, Eldorado suspended work and laid off 600 workers because of the Greek government’s opposition to the project.
But now the company has won an appeal over the government’s mining ban: Greece’s top administrative court has annulled the government’s decision to revoke Eldorado Gold’s mining license.
