The Transition Mineral Mining 50 identifies the top 50 largest, publicly traded transition mineral mining companies implicated in an active case on Environmental Justice Atlas.
‘Transition minerals’ are the minerals that are vital to the technology of low-carbon energy systems, particularly extracting, storing and transmitting renewable energy. They include: cobalt, lithium, nickel, copper, bauxite, gold, graphite, iron, silver, tin, tantalum, tungsten, zinc, and the 17 rare earth elements.
The social and environmental damage created by transition mineral supply chains is extensive and serious, including human rights and labour abuses, environmental destruction and associated exacerbation of climate injustice. Environmental Justice Atlas is a global project which documents and catalogues social conflict around environmental issues. The actions they identify these 50 mining companies as responsible for include:
- Dispossessing people of their land
- Polluting land and rivers
- Causing deadly disasters
- Producing radioactive legacies
- Association with militarisation, conflict and human rights abuses
The Transition Mineral Mining 50 was originally compiled by People & Planet to identify targets for their Fossil Free Careers campaign.
