Last December, Western Shoshone plaintiffs won a court stay on expansion by Barrick Gold of its major Cortez gold mine in Nevada, citing environmental violations. Since then, the company has proceeded with the project after allegedly failing to implement many of the conditions laid down by the court. The tribes are now calling for the mine’s operations to be suspended. The Western Shoshone and their supporters returned to court on February 5th, seeking full enforcement of the earlier order.
