Around 350 inhabintants of Doima in the department of Tolima in Colombia declared an indefinite strike on 5 February and blocked a bridge giving London-listed AngloGold Ashanti access to the hamlet of Piedras.
Protesters reject the company’s plans to use the site for processing gold ore, to be mined at the company’s planned La Colosa project, with cyanide and mercury. Doima is a rice growing area and there are fears of pollution of water.
