Australia: Aboriginal community reject extension of Ranger mine

Mines and Communities recently published a story about a fire that Rio Tinto subsidiary Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) started within the Kakadu National Park that got out of control. Even as the flames were being damped down, ERA was dealing with another – more existential – crisis. The Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation have confirmed that the Aboriginal Mirarr people cannot consider any possible extension to their authority to mine on the Ranger Project. Without their consent the mine will need to close in early 2021.

ACE paid Raiffeisen Bank $50 million earlier this year to acquire soured loans whose collateral included, among other things, a 23.8 percent stake in London-based Asia Resource Minerals Plc, according to a Sept. 8 affidavit filed by ACE’s ultimate director Kin Chan in response to a suit from the lender. That was a crucial part of Sinarmas’s successful takeover. The other 15 percent of Berau Coal’s equity is owned by smaller shareholders, including mutual funds and individuals.

An opponent of the UK based mining company Petropavlovsk (previously Peter Hambro Mining), who is a leader in the indigenous Evenk community, has been sentenced to 5 years in a penal colony, in what appears at the least to be an overly harsh sentence, and could be a mis-carriage of justice.
