Mining giant BHP under fire from lawmakers

London-listed BHP Billiton came under heavy fire in Parliament [of Papua New Guinea] yesterday with legislators describing the PNG Sustainable Development Program as only a clever ploy.

The legislators are claiming the mining giant came up with the program to escape prosecution for massive environmental damage from Ok Tedi mining operations.

Vedanta's Lanjigarh subterfuge

At Vedanta’s annual general meeting in London on August 1 2014, the newly-elected CEO, Tom Albanese, defended conduct of a July Public Hearing at Lanjigarh, Odisha (Orissa), in these terms:
“[It] was a proper process and the community was in favour of the expansion of the refinery at Lanjigarh”. This refinery is located adjacent to the Nyamgiri hills, the mining of which was last year overwhelmingly rejected by indigenous members of that community in village councils (gram sabhas). India’s Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) upheld their decision, and no attempt has been made to initiate the project since. It’s a different matter so far as the alumina refinery is concerned.
