Rio Tinto has escalated a labour dispute at its aluminium smelter in Iceland by proposing that contractors be denied the right to strike. The company is also proposing to expand the use of lower paid contractors at the site.

In an unexpected announcement, mining giant Rio Tinto, the world’s second largest miner, said Thursday its chief executive, Sam Walsh, would retire on July 1 and that Jean-Sébastien Jacques, the copper and coal division boss, would take the reins of the company.
