It may not mark the conclusion of what has been a prolonged and well-coordinated international campaign to achieve a community’s basic rights, following a brutal eviction from their territory. But the agreement made last month between Cerrejon Coal (owned by three of the world’s most powerful mining companies – London-listed Anglo American, BHP Billiton and Xstrata) and residents of Tabaco in northern Colombia, is a significant victory, hopefully presaging the”beginning of the end” of a remarkable 7-year long struggle. LMN member group Colombia Solidarity Campaign has played a major role in the international campaign. This victory proves the importance of perseverance.
