A report has been produced based on research by Norway’s international environmental foundation, Bellona, aimed at addressing the negative impacts on environment and public health caused by plants operated by Russia’s Norilsk Nickel Mining and Metallurgical Company (MMC).
In November 2009, the Norwegian government Pension Fund withdrew its funding of Norilsk, citing the company’s widespread environmental pollution.
In 2006, UK-Australian Rio Tinto entered an exploration partnership with MMC Norilsk. Soon afterwards, BHP Billiton signed a similar agreement with the Russian enterprise.
