… and against mining in the Philippines
Xstrata’s proposed Tampakan mine continues to be mired in controversy. The project is increasingly seen as the lynchpin of the battles over the mining industry in the Philippines. As such, it has been a bad past few weeks for the company, and for the industry. Xstrata’s appeal against the denial of their environmental clearance has itself been denied.
As we have seen from previous articles, this hasn’t stopped the company continuing to develop the mine regardless. However, it is a big blow in legal terms.
Added to this, farmers whose water rights may be affected, are the latest group to raise their voices against the mine.
