As tensions in the mining sector start to flair up again, newly-elected ANC Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa told CNN that mining companies need to take greater responsibility for the welfare of their workers. Speaking to Christiane Amanpour, the billionaire and Lonmin director defended his widely publicised and controversial emails sent to senior government officials the day before the Marikana massacre. Ramaphosa said that there was not a link between his call for action and the heavy handed police response that saw 34 miners being shot.
