BHP Billiton Australia House demo (2)
Actions at BHP Billiton offices in Melbourne and London, Tuesday 26 May
Yesterday, activists in Melbourne in Australia and in London targeted the offices of BHP Billiton to draw attention to the damage caused by the company’s activities in the rainforests of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The company’s Indomet Project threatens to destroy pristine forest and has already disrupted the lives of local indigenous communities.
In Australia, activists attempted to unfurl a huge banner in BHP Billiton headquarters containing the names of over 9,000 people who are calling for the company to abandon its plans to build a series of coal mines in the area.
In London, representatives of London Mining Network and member group Global Justice Now presented the petition to company management.
