A tailings dam rupture at the Samarco iron ore mine in Brazil, jointly owned by massive Brazilian mining company Vale and the world’s largest mining company, London-listed BHP Billiton, was one of the worst mining disasters in Brazilian history and one of the worst globally in recent years.
