We are pleased to announce London Mining Network’s annual gathering event

Confronting Glencore: People Fighting Corporate Power.

The event will be held on 22 June at 18:30 online.

The Annual Gathering is a great opportunity to meet friends and supporters of LMN. It’s also a chance to meet some of the mining-affected communities that we work with. This year, we will be joined by members of the Espinar community, whose struggle to protect their land, health and human rights illustrates the need for international solidarity. For over 40 years, the Espinar community in the southern highlands of Peru has faced the health, environmental, social and cultural impacts of copper mining operations. These operations have been run by companies associated with the London Stock exchange – first BHP, then Xstrata and now Glencore. Despite years of social conflict and dangerous contamination of local water sources, documented and reported many times, neither the Peruvian state nor Glencore has provided remedy or reparations.

People in Espinar are calling on the international community to back their campaign for effective due diligence legislation in Europe and in Great Britain. These laws would require companies operating in countries outside their remit to identify any potential human rights and environmental repercussions to their activities, to mitigate these risks and, if they were to happen, ensure necessary remedies. As part of their European speaking tour, we will be hearing from:

– Karem Luque, NGO Human Rights Without Borders and member of the National Coordination of the Technical Table on Human and Environmental Health.

– Esmeralda Larota Umasi, Association of Women Defenders of K’ana territory and Culture, AMDETEK

With this event, we hope to strengthen ties and show solidarity to the community, provide a platform to discuss new evidence supporting indigenous communities’ complaints about environmental and water pollution, and to reflect on how the UK and international community has a responsibility to act.

For further biographical information, please see our event registration page. Whether digitally or in person, we look forward to seeing you at our Annual Gathering.
